Top Homeowners Insurance Companies - Just the Facts Ma'am

By Stacy Fox

What are the top homeowners insurance companies out there? J.D. Power and Associates gives awards annually which evaluate many components of insurance satisfaction and performance. They are: overall experience, contacting the insurer, policy offers, billing and payment, and pricing. Together, these create the ranking for the best and worst in insurance companies.

In 2009, as in the last 7 years, the top award wen tto Amica Mutual. They received 5 stars in every category. Amica has 34 regional offices across the United States.

The top five insurance companies were Amica, Erie Insurance, State Farm, Auto-Owners (which covers home owners as well as cars), and Cincinnati Insurance.

Tying for the bottom spot are the following three companies: Traveler's Insurance, the Fireman's Fund, and AIG.

The J.D. Powers and Associates poll shows that you should shop for homeowners insurance on more than price alone. Service is an important measure in your overall satisfaction.

In addition, make sure that when you shop on price you are comparing apples to apples. Many companies claim to have the lowest prices but also have limited coverage.

You should also ask your friends and neighbors how satisfied they are with their insurance. Sometimes an insurance company's regional office offers better or worse service than is offered by the company at large.

If you are going to select a smaller local or regional insurance company, go to the AM Best Website to make sure their financial situation is such that they could pay out even if a major catastrophe hit the region. The last thing you want is for your insurance company to go under when you need them most.

That is the way to find the top homeowners insurance companies
